Summer 2024 Internship Experience

INTRODUCTION

I joined the Content Design Resources team at Apple as a UI/UX Design Intern. Over the course of 12 weeks, I ideated, designed, and prototyped a tool to help podcasters create artwork that aligns with Apple’s guidelines. The nature of my work is confidential, so I am unable to share any further details.

OVERVIEW

The experience

During my time at Apple, I worked with the Content Design Resources team to take on the challenge of helping Apple’s partners (podcasters, artists, etc) create and publish artwork onto platforms. Specifically, I focused on creating a tool for Podcast creators to ensure their artwork aligns with company and general design guidelines. Throughout the internship, I focused on product design, visual design, and interaction design, using Sketch and Keynote to prototype and present my work.

At the end of my internship, I had the privilege of presenting my work to Robert Kondrk, the VP of Apple Services, and his direct reports!

REFLECTION

My main takeaways

I’m incredibly grateful for my time at Apple, to have had the opportunity to learn from and meet so many talented designers! Here are my most valuable lessons from this experience:

🌟 A good presentation requires not only good visuals, but also good storytelling.

I began my internship sitting in on meetings as my team repeatedly iterated on VOs (voice-overs/speaker notes), paying attention to the slightest nuances and pauses. I was able to apply these practices to present what I worked on over 12 weeks, in under 10 minutes, and I leave my internship feeling much stronger about my storytelling and presentation skills!

🌟 Take initiative, even if you’re *just* an intern.

Working at a large company for the first time and being the only intern on a team of 3 was a big adjustment from working with other designers my age. I took initiative by setting up brainstorming meetings and weekly check-ins, and communicating effectively on Slack to receive feedback and ultimately create a better solution! 3 minds work better than 1 :)

🌟 Don’t be afraid to ask questions

Whether it was learning the ropes for Sketch and Keynote, or just general design critiques, I would ask my desk neighbors and others on the wider Content Design team for help as well!
